The purpose of the role

We re looking for a passionate and driven Health Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) specialist who shares in this vision to join our busy team.  You ll enjoy the challenge of being in a sole charge role where you can make your mark, influence leaders at the highest level, and make a positive difference to the health and wellbeing culture of our organisation.

In this role, you ll be providing best practice HSW guidance, practices and systems to Stats NZ, with support from your People and Culture team colleagues.  To do this, you ll be researching, designing, testing and implementing a variety of HSW solutions to meet the need of our varied and diverse from Field Interviewers, Contact Centre staff, to office staff. 

With a great base of health, safety and wellbeing systems and practices already in place, along with active Health, Safety and Wellbeing committees in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, we will look to you to continue to build on our proactive HSW culture by:

  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with leaders and key stakeholders, to influence positive HSW behaviour and change and truly embed a culture of Health, Safety and Wellbeing at Stats NZ
  • Designing and implementing effective identification and management of HSW risks in a collaborative way
  • Providing expert HSW advice, support and services to the organisation

Person specifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A HSW related tertiary degree and/or equivalent work experience
  • Proven experience in HSW theory and practice - enough to provide robust advice and practice in HSW and related legislation; preferably in the public service
  • Proven experience building, managing and delivering results through relationships (internal and external), networking, and connecting across a range of levels and functions
  • Successful relationship and influencing experience and skills, able to relate to all walks of life and create buy-in to embed processes and initiatives
  • Advanced communication skills (both written and verbal), able to professionally present sometimes complex information to a range of audiences through a range of mediums, up to and including Public Service reporting
  • A can-do attitude, great initiative, ability to work un-supervised and still be a team player
  • Proven experience in facilitation of work groups/committees, focus groups and workshops
