We have a great opportunity as an intelligence analyst in our Strategic Intelligence Team. You will provide analysis that ensures Customs is prepared for the risks of the future and all over the issues of today. This is a role where you could be involved in collaborative intelligence products between work-areas in Customs, with other government agencies in New Zealand, and with partner agencies around the world.

As a Strategic Intelligence Analyst, you will be responsible for understanding current and emerging risks through the analysis of international trends, intelligence from partner agencies, and Customs' own extensive datasets and intelligence holdings. This role will see you leading your own assessments and contributing to multiple pieces of work - from collection on behalf of other analysts, requesting information from internal and external groups, conducting or participating in structured analytic sessions, to drafting your own or reviewing another analyst's product.
In this role, you will draw on a wide variety of sources to inform your assessments, so expect to regularly review Customs intelligence products, intelligence reporting from government and industry, Customs' own extensive datasets, as well as data and intelligence from multi-lateral bodies like the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
The salary range for this role is $64,608 to $81,474. We offer flexible working arrangements and full training will be provided.
The Strategic Intelligence Analyst role is an operational role within Customs, at the rank of Senior Customs Officer (Grade 1, Strategic Intelligence) and you will be appointed to this rank on successfully completing all requirements.
What you will need:
You will need to obtain and maintain a Top Secret level national security clearance. In order to obtain this clearance, you need to be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past 10 years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: *either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. Small periods (3 months or less) of absence from New Zealand over the 10 years may still be acceptable however you must be able to provide police certificates for time spent in other countries*.
You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Already having Top Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.
Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ Drivers' licence.
