About Maritime NZ

Maritime NZ is the national maritime regulatory, compliance and response agency for the safety, security and environmental protection of Aotearoa New Zealand's maritime environment.

As a Crown Entity Maritime NZ exercises kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, over the maritime domain to ensure the oceans and waterways of Aotearoa New Zealand are safe, secure, clean and sustainable.

They are currently on a multi-year journey to bring together our aroha, work and skills to ensure we can operate more strongly as stewards of the maritime domain through their organisational strategy Te Korowai o Kaitiakitanga, The Cloak of Stewardship.

About the role

As a member of the Organisational Strategy and Systems Leadership Team reporting the DCE, this role will provide strategic leadership, influence and advice across Maritime NZ, supporting the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership team and Board, ensuring sound commercial decision making and strategic direction. This is a fantastic opportunity for a forward-looking CFO with a strong sense of commercial savviness to drive strategy and decision making, ensuring better outcomes.

Unique in its nature and breadth, this role will have oversight of multiple business streams including finance, property and procurement, business services and financial operations and planning. As a crown entity, Maritime relies on multiple revenue streams and third-party funding, to which the CFO will be pivotal in providing strategic financial and commercial advice, to support decision making on value for money, revenue, and cost optimisation.

Following a period of extensive growth and change in recent years, the CFO will focus on embedding these changes, with an emphasis on driving forward outcomes and high performance. Therefore, it will be crucial the role builds credible and long-lasting relationships across a myriad of stakeholders internally and externally and be a proud and passionate representative of Maritime.

What you will bring

For this complex, multifaceted CFO role, we are looking for a commercial individual with a strong financial background, someone who is ready to take the next step in their career and have an impact at the strategic level. You will be a well-respected and inspiring leader, someone who is comfortable building and nurturing relationships not only the executive level, but across the organisation and wider industry.

You will be a collaborative, people-focused leader who brings a sharp focus to financial sustainability and continuous improvement. As an accomplished professional, you have bring experience of being a leader in high performing finance functions.

To excel in this role, you will bring;

  • Sound knowledge of finance systems and processes alongside a demonstrated understanding of the Public Finance Act, with the ability to make strategic, high-level decisions;
  • Proven success in a multi-business, commercial environment;
  • The ability to build, lead and motivate a cohesive and high functioning team to deliver on Maritime's strategic intentions;
  • Proven experience developing trusted relationships at an executive level, with the ability to influence key decision makers;
  • The experience and ability to successfully apply both public sector and commercial contexts within an organisation;
  • Experience working in a government agency and a sound understanding of the machinery of government
