Senior Medical Officer - Nationwide at Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections), Nationwide
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
We have two opportunities for individual medical practitioners (general practitioners/urgent care doctors), or general practice or PHO teams, to work as medical officers in prisons in either:
- A locum capacity (casual hours as required), which may include travelling around the country to our different sites (travel and accommodation will be covered by the department)
- Contracted 16 hours per week based at Mt Eden Correctional Facility.
The medical officer role is specified in the Corrections Regulations 2005 and offers a broad and varied scope of practice. Work is clinically interesting and professionally challenging with opportunities to further develop skills in general medicine, acute presentations and long-term condition management.

Prison Health services provide a stimulating and well supported clinical environment. Medical Officers are supported by:
- A Medical Services Manager
- The Clinical Director
- Health Centre Managers and regional clinical teams
- The wider Pae Ora health network
You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for providing care to people in our care with high physical and mental health needs.

This role will suit practitioners with experiences in
- general practice and/or urgent care
- acute medical assessment and management
- Long term condition management
- Primary mental health care
