About the Role

We have a fixed-term, full-time opportunity to join our Hauora Māori Tūmatanui team as a Kaitohutohu Matua Prevention (Senior Advisor), reporting to the Kairuruku Matua.

The primary purpose of this role is to contribute to the national Prevention Directorate wharepuni within the Pā Tūwatawata to deliver the Hauora Māori Tūmatanui work programme and assist in building the capacity of the Prevention Directorate and support a strong partnership between both Directorates for the benefit of kaimahi Māori in the Prevention Directorate.

In the regions, in partnership with the Kaitaki Mana Whakahaere, provide expert advice and support activities on prevention to support the effective delivery of the Hauora Māori Tūmatanui Directorate work programme. In partnership with the Kaitaki Mana Whakahaere, contribute to regional prevention initiatives, projects and services that impact on iwi and Māori communities.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of swiftly assembling and synthesizing diverse information, knowledge, and analysis. You will be entrusted with handing complex, sensitive information, showcasing your unwavering drive to deliver results and take ownership of critical tasks. You will play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and partnerships both within our organisation and with external stakeholders. One of your core skills will be building constructive relationships that are based on an understanding and an active approach to the use of te Reo Māori, tikanga and kawa.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Conversant in/A level of/committed to learning te reo Māori
  • Needs to draw on relevant longer-term experience specific to the job and work demands, acquired over a minimum of 5 years
  • Experience in applying critical thinking and using sound judgement to develop options and provide advice, particularly in leading complex or contentious policy work
  • Leadership experience, including designing and managing a portfolio of work, and resources
  • A preference for experience in working across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Previous experience in applying critical thinking, using sound judgment to develop options and knowledge of the machinery of government, and policy development, is preferable
  • Strong understanding of tikanga and kawa and significant experience working in partnership iwi and Māori communities
  • Previous experience in applying critical thinking, using sound judgment to develop options and knowledge of the machinery of government, and policy development, is preferable
