  • Permanent, full-time role based anywhere in New Zealand.
  • High-impact national influence — Lead pricing programmes that shape how hospital and specialist services are understood and planned across the New Zealand health system.
  • Work with purpose and complexity — Apply deep analytical expertise to meaningful system-level challenges, driving improvements in data quality, costing, and equity-focused decision-making.
  • Grow and lead in a transformative environment — Coach others, collaborate across the motu, and contribute to health system planning.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.

We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

As a Principal Analyst, you will lead the Non-Casemix pricing programme, providing senior technical expertise across costing, pricing, and data quality improvement. You'll support key workstreams that underpin how hospital and specialist services are understood, ensuring insights are accurate, reliable, and aligned with national priorities.

A typical day could include developing complex analytics, providing high-level advice to stakeholders, collaborating with national project groups or regional costing teams, and influencing decision‑makers across the health system. You'll also play a critical role in coaching team members, strengthening engagement, and supporting continuous improvement across the organisation.

About you

To be successful as a Principal Analyst, you will bring:

  • A relevant graduate or postgraduate qualification, or equivalent experience
  • At least 7 years' experience in activity-based costing and pricing, preferably in a healthcare environment
  • Strong financial, analytical and data interpretation skills
  • Excellent communication skills — able to translate complex information clearly
  • Proven experience leading work programmes and influencing stakeholders

Desired:

  • Experience coaching and mentoring others
  • Understanding of the machinery of Government
  • Ability to connect programme components and understand system‑wide impacts
