Here at the Mt. Eden Corrections Facility we are the prison for all male offenders placed on Remand in the Auckland region.
As a Corrections Officer for us you will join our busy team that supports the men we manage as they transition into the prison system. You will use your excellent communication skills to influence and assist them in adjusting to their new surroundings, making good choices and taking the right actions. Your ‘duty-of-care' contribution will have a positive effect in the lives of these men.
The Department of Corrections is passionate about reducing re-offending and keeping communities safe. Our Correction Officers, both men and women, come from a diverse range of cultures and bring a wide range of employment skills, languages and life experiences with them.
We have monthly intakes for new Correction Officer employees and we're now recruiting for January, February and March 2022.
Our standards are high. You will undergo a comprehensive selection process that will assess you against our core requirements. All candidates are required to complete a full disclosure criminal history check. Please note - the Criminal History Check is Exempt from The Clean Slate Act. In other words, the Clean Slate Act does not apply to this position. Please declare any and all offences (even those outside 7 years) in your application.
Due to operational requirements, we are prioritising applications from people who have experience in a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika environment – please ensure that you highlight any relevant experience in your CV and Cover Letter.
Upon gaining an offer of employment you will be required to complete an initial residential 11- week training course. Long-term there are many opportunities for promotion and professional development e.g. qualifications in Offender Management. The starting salary is $54,793 and increases to $57,432 after you graduate from the initial training.
A career as a Corrections Officer is much more challenging, much more interesting and much more rewarding than you can imagine!
To be eligible to apply you need:
- A current and full non-conditional New Zealand driver licence (NB. If you hold an International Driver Licence you can still apply however you must convert this to a full NZ Driver Licence before an offer of employment can be formally made to you)
- The legal right to work full-time in New Zealand (ideally for a minimum of no less than 24 months)
- The ability to pass a pre-employment drug test, a full medical assessment and a physical readiness assessment
- To declare any convictions and/or conflicts of interest and have them approved by us in accordance with our Corrections delegations policy
- To commit to working rostered shifts across a 24/7 rota
COVID-19 vaccination requirements
From 8 December 2021, all people working inside prisons will be required to be fully vaccinated as part of the COVID-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021. People in prison are some of the most vulnerable to COVID-19 and due to the ease of transmission, extending the Vaccination Order supports the safety and wellbeing of our staff and people in prison.
