At the Department of Corrections we are passionate about reducing re-offending and keeping communities safe.  Our Corrections Officers, both men and women, come from varied backgrounds and a diverse range of cultures. They bring a wide range of employment skills and life experiences with them.

As a Corrections Officer you will join a highly supportive team that manages offenders in prison and in the community.  You will use your communication skills to influence offenders, assisting them to make the right choices, take the right actions at the right times and continually support their individual pathways towards living offence-free lives.  Your contribution will count and you will have a positive effect on the lives of others and public safety.

To be eligible to apply you need:

  • A current and full New Zealand or international driver licence (NB. You must obtain a full NZ Driver Licence before an offer of employment can be formally made to you)
  • The legal right to work full-time in New Zealand (ideally for a minimum of no less than 24 months)
  • The ability to pass a pre-employment drug test, medical assessment and physical readiness assessment
  • To declare any convictions and/or conflicts of interest and have them approved by us in accordance with our Corrections delegations policy

Our standards are high. You will undergo a comprehensive selection process that will assess you against our core requirements.

Upon an offer of employment you will be required to complete an initial residential 11- week training course. Long-term there are many opportunities for promotion and professional development e.g. a qualification in Offender Management.

The starting salary is $53,457 increasing to $56,031 after your initial training.
