Assistant Investigator, Product Safety and Consumer Information Standards at NZ Commerce Commission, Auckland

Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is Aotearoa New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency. The Commission is going through an exciting period of growth, driven by increases in its functions, duties and powers.

We are looking for an Assistant Investigator to join our team in the Fair Trading branch. This is a permanent role based in our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) office.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

Our Fair Trading Branch helps to ensure consumers are protected, and clear and accurate information is provided to them. The Product Safety and Consumer Information Standards (PS&CIS) Team promotes compliance and investigates alleged breaches of Parts 2 (Consumer Information) and 3 (Product Safety) of The Fair Trading Act 1986. Our work focuses on protecting New Zealanders from harm. 

The Assistant Investigator will work closely with experienced investigators in the PS&CIS Team and across the Fair Trading Branch to provide advice to businesses, gather and analyse evidence, and undertake project based work.

We are looking for someone who is naturally inquisitive, prepared to ask questions, and has a keen eye for detail.

You'll also be:

  • interested in protecting consumers from harm
  • confident compiling information and undertaking analysis
  • able to navigate and develop your understanding of legal and technical documents
  • a confident communicator and comfortable contributor to in-person discussions and well written reports
  • excellent at time management - able to prioritise your workload and successfully juggle multiple demands
