Payroll Support Specialist at Te Whatu Ora, Auckland

About the Role

As a Payroll Support Specialist, you will provide high-quality administrative, technical and analytical support to leaders across the National Payroll structure. This is a varied and influential role where your expertise will directly support informed decision-making, payroll accuracy, and continuous improvement across the organisation.

You'll work across payroll data, reporting, and analysis, contribute to Employment Relations Authority (ERA) matters, support CME implementation, and assist with national datasets, audits, and legislative requirements. You'll also collaborate closely with payroll, HR, legal teams, and business units across Health New Zealand, contributing to a nationwide system that supports thousands of kaimahi.

This role is well suited to someone who enjoys working with complexity, using data and critical thinking to solve problems, and contributing to a collaborative, improvement-focused team environment.

About You

You will bring strong payroll and analytical capability, along with a commitment to equity, quality, and service excellence. Ideally, you will have:

  • Relevant qualifications or 5+ years' experience in payroll and/or HR roles
  • Strong experience in payroll analysis, reporting, and providing technical advice
  • Ability to interpret data, develop reports, and support decision-making in complex environments
  • Sound knowledge of payroll systems and strong computer literacy (Excel, Word, Power BI or similar tools)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage a range of stakeholders
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how to apply its principles in your work

Experience in government or large, complex organisations is desirable.
