ED Senior House Officers -Tauranga Commencing 2024 at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty, Bay of Plenty
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
We are keen to hear from committed, enthusiastic and dynamic Senior House Officers looking for new opportunities commencing January 2024 through to January 2025.
Mō Tātou – About Us
Situated in the sunny eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, the Bay of Plenty really is just that, offering vast golden sand beaches, bush clad mountains, lush farmlands and more.
Its pleasant climate means that the area has become a favourite for holiday makers, retirees and those looking for a different lifestyle outside of the main cities.
Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is spread across a vast geographical area and centred across two hospitals based in Tauranga and Whakatāne. We serve a population of approximately 308,000 for the major population centres of Tauranga, Katikati, Te Puke, Whakatāne, Kawerau and Ōpōtiki. Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is one of the Bay of Plenty's largest employers with over 4000 staff.
Tauranga Hospital is a Level 5 hospital with acute services including general medicine and medical sub-specialities, cardiology, intensive care, paediatrics, O&G, mental health, orthopaedics, general and vascular surgery, urology, ENT and ophthalmology within Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty.
The Emergency Department is a dynamic and evolving service which has undergone considerable staff expansion recently. We are staffed by 11 SMOs (six FACEMs) offering 16 hours per day direct shop floor supervision. We have seven ED registrars so that our SHOs have support and guidance from either a consultant or registrar 24 hours a day. We are a busy department seeing 50,000 patients per year, 20% of which are paediatric patients. We see a broad case-mix with a 35% admission rate reflecting the acuity of presentations trainees will be exposed to.
We are passionate about medical education and offer protected teaching for three hours a week, including an active simulation programme. Several of our ED consultants are supervisors for the ACEM Certificate in Emergency Medicine. This is an excellent, well-supported programme for SHOs who are looking to gain an additional qualification whilst furthering their knowledge and skill over a six-month period in ED. Research opportunities will also be available for interested and enthusiastic trainees.
He kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role

We are a close-knit team who enjoy the challenging environment of Emergency Medicine. We feel fortunate to live and work in such a great place and look forward to sharing this with our successful applicants.
