Regional Advisor Māori Partnerships at Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections), Canterbury (Waitaha)

The Māori Partnership group plays a significant role in delivering on our Hōkai Rangi strategy.  It does this by supporting transformational change and guiding the Department's approach to its work through the provision of advice on strategic policy and research.  Our key focus is working to strengthen our relationships with Māori and other Government agencies to improve outcomes with, and for, Māori.  

Ngā kawenga | About the role

As part of this team, the role of Regional Adviser Māori Partnerships has a clear focus on the creation, development and maintenance of critical relationships with iwi Māori and other key Māori stakeholders.

The role will also provide support and cultural advice to leadership and frontline teams across Ara Poutama.  The regional advisory team are also the first point of call for staff regarding best practice in terms of making meaningful contact with iwi and Māori provider groups.

Key accountabilities of the role will include:

  • Creating greater opportunities for mana whenua and iwi Māori to have functional relationships & collaborative roles with our Prisons and Community Corrections Services.
  • To facilitate and promote iwi/mana whenua and kaitiaki as primary providers of cultural advice and support within the Southern Region.
  • Maintaining, progressing, and developing relationships and networks with mana whenua, Kaiwhakamana and key Māori organisations including rūnanga, kaumatua, and iwi/hapū based groups.
  • To champion Hōkai Rangi (The Departments Strategy) across all areas of the business arms of Ara Poutama Aotearoa.
  • Implement and drive our Māori Partnership Framework.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • The demonstrated ability to effectively operate within Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Hurihuri and have the core skills and agility to facilitate effective collaboration with iwi, hapū and kaitiaki.
  • A good awareness of current justice sector trends and issues including the social and political environment of Ara Poutama Aotearoa.
  • A strong commitment to Hōkai Rangi and the vision of Ara Poutama Aotearoa.
  • Strong, proven relationship management skills and a natural flair for networking. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders at all levels.
  • Some experience using relationship management technology is advantageous.

Travel is a requirement of the role.

There is flexibility as to where the role is located in the Southern Region, however, the successful applicant must be able to travel.    

A full driver licence is required.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

The mid-point of the salary range is $89,210 and the full range (85%-120%) is $75,829 - $107,052. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
