About the Role

We have a permanent, full-time opportunity available to join our protection team as a Public Health Emergency Manager.    

The purpose of this role is to develop and maintain public health emergency management through collaboration and coordination across NPHS and other stakeholders involved in readiness and response.

This role is key to supporting public health emergency management for the health and disability system and providing assurance to our partners and governance structure on the state of readiness across the system.  It acknowledges that there are two distinct modes of operation; a business-as-usual component and a response component to rapidly and effectively respond to the unfolding needs of an event.

The successful candidate for this role would need to be based in the Te Waipounamu region.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

You will be dedicated to responding effectively to potential and current public health incidents and emergencies and understand in times of crisis, sound decisions, consistent advice, and timely support are essential. You understand that addressing public health emergencies requires a collective effort and actively foster a collaborative work environment wherever team members insights and expertise are valued. You believe providing leadership that inspires and guides the team through challenging times and is dedicated to ensuring that the goals at hand make a positive impact both nationally and regionally.

Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of Emergency Management legislation, regulations and standards in NZ
  • Extensive experience in Emergency Management, which can be adapted to contribute to the reduction and management of public health incidents and emergencies
  • Knowledge of the health system, risk management, and managing at the political interface
  • Able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with people at all levels within the public and private sectors, related industry and community interest groups
  • Tertiary qualification in a health or relevant field and/or equivalent experience
  • With the support of Health NZ, you will proactively take care of your own health and safety, to ensure a safe and supportive work environment
