Ranger (Fixed Term) at Department of Conservation, Stewart Island

Te Papa Atawhai, Department of Conservation (DOC) serves to protect and sustain nature across Aotearoa. We put nature and people at the heart of our mahi, guided by te reo Māori, te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We do this by:

He angitūtanga | About the role

The Rakiura/Stewart Island operations team has a 6-month secondment (and/or fixed term) position available and is looking for someone that isn't afraid to get stuck into conservation mahi! Your mahi will be diverse and you will work alongside the Supervisor and other permanent Rangers on a variety of biodiversity work programmes. Your will work include: 

  • Managing assigned project work
  • Trapping and weeding
  • Pest species work (both plant and animal)
  • Assisting the wider operations team when required
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with stake holders and internal staff

You will be joining a positive and enthusiastic team delivering conservation outcomes in Rakiura. Housing is available on the island in shared DOC accommodation.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

You will be exposed to natural ecosystems and pristine clear waters with a marine reserve located close by in Patersons Inlet, a rain forest, a plethora of flora and fauna where wildlife is thriving (seals, parrots, penguins, kiwi, weka, kākā). Working in the Rakiura office, you will be supported by a friendly and passionate team. 

This role is unique and will require you to have a key focus on health and safety and proven back-country experience. If you are a keen outdoorsperson and have a passion for conservation, we urge you to apply.

 If you have the following skills, we want to hear from you:

  • High personal commitment to Health and Safety with a current First Aid certificate
  • Experience with trapping and weeding
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent planning, organisational skills, and attention to detail
  • Practical experience and interest in biodiversity work

Desired:

  • A current Growsafe standard certificate
  • CSL qualification
  • Experience working in the building/painting trades or similar
  • Experience working with Light Utility Vehicles (LUV)
  • Boat operator experience

 

Mō te tīma | About the team

The Kaitiaki Ranger position will form part of an energetic and hardworking team comprised of the Senior Rangers, Supervisor, 8 Rangers and several summer seasonal staff based in Rakiura. The Rakiura operational team are a close-knit team, so you'll get the opportunity to be exposed to different work streams during your time in the role.

The salary range for this position is $51,278 to $60,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.  

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
