He angitūtanga | About the roles
Te Papa Atawhai is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individuals to join our Kaitaia operations team. We have three exciting permanent, full-time opportunities for the right individuals to build on their skillset and be part of a professional team achieving high quality conservation outcomes.
These roles form an integral part of our regional teams within the Northern North Island, contributing to our kaupapa of ensuring we deliver high-quality conservation goals and outcomes that align with our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Working alongside whānau, hapū and iwi and other partners collaboratively and effectively, as well as community and local businesses, you will be someone who has a passion for conservation and feels inspired by our shared purpose and values.
These roles are predominantly field based, working Monday – Friday with flexibility required.
We have a variety of roles available, all with a slightly different focus. These are listed below, but in whatever role you have, you will work to support the Kaitaia district and be exposed to a variety of different experiences.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have the following attributes for each position, we are keen to hear from you:
- Be a great organiser with the ability to be adaptable and pick up work on an when required basis.
- Experience using Microsoft office, GIS and the proven ability to be adept.
- Be a great leader and demonstrate experience advocating for either conservation or a passion that you've demonstrated across your mahi.
- Effective communication either oral or verbal with the ability to maintain key relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
Specifically for each role it will be highly desirable if you:
Senior Ranger Community role
- Have a tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in project management.
- Experience with the Resource Management Act or applying legislation to decision making.
- Experience using social media channels and traditional media channels.
Senior/Ranger Biodiversity roles
- Experience with threatened species management.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Natural heritage or conservation management qualification at level 5 or above.
- Interpreting GIS, maps and/or ArcGIS.

The Kaitaia team is a passionate team of 18 permanent staff, with support from contractors and casual & fixed term staff. The team are experts in their fields of Biodiversity, Community and Heritage and Visitors but work closely together and there is often the opportunity to support each other depending on the priorities of the district.

The starting salary of the successful applicants is based on their relevant skills and experience. The salary range for these positions are:
- Ranger Biodiversity - $58,314 to $73,401
- Senior Ranger Community and Biodiversity - $77,336 to $97,708
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
