Ranger Visitor Centre (Fixed term, Arthur's Pass) at Department of Conservation, Christchurch

  • The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 pro rata.
  • Full time, 12 months fixed term or secondment opportunity. Based in Arthur's Pass Visitor Centre.

He angitūtanga | About the role

You will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the visitor centre, ensuring that the operations are kept running smoothly. You will deliver quality information on conservation and recreational activities to visitors, maintain stock, coordinate purchases and build relationships with local suppliers. This rewarding role is based in Arthur's Pass, in the heart of the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana.

Core components of this role include:

  • Providing visitors with up-to-date information on visitor safety, local conservation projects, weather and conditions of the track and huts and recreation opportunities
  • Assisting visitors with retail purchases
  • Conveying visitor safety information clearly, concisely and in a positive manner
  • Providing media and communications support
  • Supporting wider district community programmes

The position operates on a rostered basis, with scheduled workdays from Thursday to Monday.

DOC shared rental accommodation is available for the successful candidate.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experience/demonstrated competence in customer service, computer skills, sales, and retail
  • Works co-operatively and collaboratively as a member of a team to accomplish goals and resolve problems
  • Strong communicator with the ability to interpret, explain and convey information
  • An enquiring mind and a willingness to learn
  • The ability to inspire others to make the great outdoors the ultimate experience for every visitor
  • Confident interacting with people from all walks of life
  • An active interest in outdoor pursuits and conservation
  • Desire to live in a small, remote community who are passionate about the work you do
  • A valid driver's licence

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori is an advantage
  • Current First Aid Certificate

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 pro rata, with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.

You are encouraged to discuss secondment opportunities with your manager. Secondments should offer the opportunity to build capability in line with your development plan. You must seek the support of your line manager (minimum Tier 4) in writing before applying for a secondment opportunity and attach it to your application.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
