Job Description

Are you passionate about conservation and the role that communities can play in protecting New Zealand's biodiversity and helping other conservation work.

The Department of Conservation is seeking an experienced Manager to lead its National Volunteering team and work to foster volunteering and community-led conservation around the country.

DOC currently works with over 300 community organisations and thousands of volunteers who help with conservation work. Our aim is to enable many more people and organisations to lead and support efforts to restore New Zealand's biodiversity, and improve our freshwater and marine environments.

You will drive the development of strategies, systems, tools and people to ensure the success of DOC's volunteer programme and that conservation volunteers are safe, well-supported and appreciated. You will lead a small team of distributed advisors who provide technical advice and good practice guidance to staff who work directly with the community and volunteers. Enabling increased conservation capability and leadership in communities is an important focus of the work.

To be successful in this role you will be a highly skilled manager of people with proven experience in community partnerships and stakeholder engagement. You will be able to demonstrate effective collaborative and partnership-building skills, including how to identify great opportunities, create effective agreements, maintain relationships and resolve issues.

You will have excellent communication skills and be a great people-connector. You will need to think strategically and work collaboratively within a large government agency ability to apply legislative requirements and best practice guidance to volunteering work. Ideally, you will have some experience of conservation management, project management and working in government. An understanding of te reo me ona tikanga and experience working with iwi will be an advantage.

The Volunteering Manager is one of three managers in the Community Engagement Unit, part of DOC's Partnerships Group. Regular travel to offices and projects around the country will be required.

This is a permanent full-time role based in Wellington. Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.

Please apply online via the DOC Careers Centre. Applications must include a cover letter, CV and evidence of the required capabilities as per the role description.
