Job Description

This is a unique opportunity to be part of the team working in one of New Zealand's most isolated environments for 12 months. The main focus of the role is undertaking weed control in a challenging environment but includes maintenance of the island's infrastructure and undertaking work on behalf of the Meteorological Service and Geological Nuclear Sciences (GNS).

 

There are 4 roles (of which 2 are being advertised); each with defined set of responsibilities including; Team Leader, Contracts Manager, Biodiversity Leader, Safety Advocate and Inventory Manager. Following interviews, a shortlisted group of 4-6 will be taken on a week-long shakedown in a remote area from which the final team selection and positions will be made. The Shakedown is a process to test the compatibility of applicants to work together as a team and not an endurance test.

 

You will have proven, back country experience, high level of the type of fitness required in rugged terrain, experience of being in an isolated situation, ability to get on with others, team work, a passion for the work, first aid and common sense.

 

There are other skills that must be resident in the team that are often spread across several individuals; leadership, biodiversity knowledge, plant identification, use and maintenance of tools and equipment (scrub bar's, chainsaws, tractors, boats), abseiling, use of herbicides, water safety and mechanics are a few.

 

Two successful applicants will receive up to 10 weeks training prior to deploying for 12 months on 26th February 2018. The recruitment and training timeline is as follows:

  • Applications close 1st of September
  • Interviews will be held 11th – 13th September
  • Shakedown 1st – 6th November
  • Select Staff positions for March changeover 9th November
  • Staff Training mid-December to late February 2018
  • Deploy for March Changeover 26th February 2018

 

Due to the nature of this position, the employee will be required to complete a drug test, pre-employment health questionnaire and undertake a medical examination. It may also be a requirement, with the employees consent, that his/her health be monitored in relation to hazard or hazards encountered on the job.
