Job Description

Are you someone who loves the outdoors, has lots of practical skills and enjoys working with people? If yes, then this is the job for you.

As a Ranger, Biodiversity you will be joining our talented delivery teams carrying out critical conservation work across Rakiura/Stewart Island.

Your role is broad and you will be actively working across a range of different conservation projects including:

• weed control and eradication
• dune restoration
• island biosecurity monitoring

You may also be involved in other conservation work as requested:

  • facilities maintenance and site restoration
  • working with the community and volunteers
  • animal pest control operations
  • threatened species management

We are looking for responsible and reliable team players, who are not afraid of hard work, and are capable of working in the backcountry in basic accommodation for extended periods.

Your day to day work will be focused on Rakiura / Stewart Island and may involve working throughout the Southern South Island region, carrying out conservation work on and off public conservation land, according to work plans. The role is an average of 40 hours per week, between October 2017 and March 2018.

Your skills and experience in field work will be of great help to others as your role includes supporting and/or overseeing other Rangers, community groups and volunteers doing conservation work in the field.

The successful applicant will ideally have:

• sound knowledge and/or experience in field delivery work
• a current First Aid certificate
• a good basic knowledge of conservation
• good communication skills and an ability to get on with people
• experience in pest / weed control
• the ability to interpret GIS information, produce maps and use a GPS
• a current driver's licence (desirable)
• a current GrowSafe certificate (desirable)
• a current Approved Handlers Certificate (desirable)
