Job Description

Special Education Advisers

Botany and Henderson - Full time, permanent

If you are an experienced practitioner ready for new challenges this could be your next career step.

The Ministry is looking for energetic, innovative Special Education Advisers who are ready for an opportunity to work collaboratively with other agencies to make a positive difference to the lives of our youngest tamariki, their families and whānau.

The Ministry of Education currently provides behaviour services to pre-school and school-age children through our Early Intervention Services and Behaviour Services and Support. We are now recruiting a range of specialists to help us expand those services to reach an additional 1,000 children each year across New Zealand

The role includes:

  • Working with a team, including educators, parents, caregivers and whānau, to enhance understanding about the child and their behaviours, and to collaboratively develop, implement and monitor an effective personalised learning plan.
  • Helping the adults around the child make changes to the learning environment so that the child's behaviour can be more effectively managed and the situation can be stabilised/made safer.  This would include supporting the child to develop more pro-social ways of responding, and improve their participation, wellbeing and learning outcomes.
  • Facilitating access to wider services and support in response to individual need.

You will need:

  • An ability and willingness to work in collaborative partnership with other professionals, agencies, families and the sector;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including an ability to sustain productive professional relationships;
  • A genuine commitment to evidence based interventions which demonstrate inclusive education practice and contribute to raising student achievement;
  • Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and a commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

A current driver's licence is essential and experience in the NZ education system would be an advantage.

The Ministry offers opportunities for professional development and training and a friendly, supportive working environment.
