Job Description

PEOPLE POLICY WRITER

Fixed term until June 30, 2019

Help shape the future of Education!

At the Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent outcomes.

Our organisation is made up of more than 3,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. While we work in different groups and on different things, we all work

About our team

The People Capability team supports the organisation to look after our greatest strength - our people. We understand that to get the best outcomes for children and young people, our people need to be at their best too.

We're currently expanding our team to ensure our capability to deliver key strategic outcomes including:

  • building Education's ability to attract, recruit and retain great people
  • supporting a highly-motivated, engaged, collaborative and diverse workforce
  • developing our people's skills and capability to contribute to strong organisational performance
  • delivering excellent advice and service

About this role

We're looking for a People Policy writer to take on a key project involving reviewing, updating and reorganising all our people policies and guidelines. This is a fixed term role until June 30 2019, where you'll be helping to create clear, consistent guidance for staff and managers to ensure everyone understands what is expected of them, and how they can contribute to a professional, productive and supportive working environment.

This role also involves working on other people and employment related content as required, to ensure consistent guidance and support for our staff and managers.

About you

You'll be an excellent writer and all-round communicator, who relishes the challenge of turning complexity and jargon into clear, concise, engaging advice. You'll be highly organised and self- motivated, getting up to speed quickly, and working methodically to get our policy library in order.

You'll understand the importance of getting this stuff right, and take pride in consistently delivering work to a high standard, with minimal supervision.  While you'll remain attentive to the finer detail, you'll also need to keep track of how your work links to that of the wider team and other parts of the organisation.

You'll exercise good judgement about when to take the lead and when to check in with others - as you'll not only be working with other subject matter experts within the team, but also liaising with legal and health, safety security and privacy experts to ensure our advice is always robust and accurate.

An HR, policy or communications background would be helpful, although not essential.

In return, you'll have the opportunity to make your mark, working with a friendly, supportive knowledgeable team in an influential area where you can further develop and broaden your skills and experience.
