Advisor on Deaf Children

Learning Support, Wellington Region

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic Advisor on Deaf Children (AODC) to work across the Wellington Region. The successful applicant(s) will be based in the Lower Hutt office.  Applications for full or part-time positions will be considered.

The appointees will have:

  • successfully completed the training for Advisors on Deaf Children, or have a relevant equivalent qualification and experience,
  • or be a trained Teacher of the Deaf, with recent New Zealand teaching experience and prepared to undertake further training at a Masters level,
  • or be Speech Language Therapist with a strong interest in working with babies, young children and families, looking for a new challenge or to specialise in a new area and prepared to undertake further training at a Masters level. 

The appointees will be competent in the assessment of hearing impairment, and overall educational and audiological management.  It is desirable that the appointee will have experience and or the commitment to developing skills, in delivering services to new-born, early childhood and compulsory sectors.

They will perform many interrelated services for clients of the Ministry of Education who are Deaf or hearing-impaired.  They will provide these services to educators, students, parents / caregivers, Whanau and to other service users in accordance with the guiding principles of Te Whaariki (Early Childhood Curriculum) and the NZ Curriculum Framework.  Applicants must also have knowledge of, or be prepared to acquire knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language.

Learning Support emphasises a team approach to the delivery of services and the successful applicants will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, as well as ongoing commitment to team development and practice in a culturally sensitive manner.
