Advisor on Deaf Children

 Full Time Permanent Vacancy

  Based in Tauranga and Whakatane Offices

Applications are invited from a suitably qualified and experienced Adviser on Deaf Children to join our innovative, dynamic and energetic team providing services to deaf and hard of hearing children and their families. We provide a friendly, supportive work environment with an excellent professional network.

The successful applicant will provide specialist advice and guidance to children and young people with sensori-neural or long-term conductive hearing loss, their families and support services. 

A Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities) or a Diploma of Advisor on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children or equivalent qualification is required.

An experienced Resource Teacher of the Deaf (RTD) or Speech Language Therapist (SLT) may be considered for the position but may be required to complete a Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities).  A Ministry of Education Study Award may be available to support the appointee undertaking this training.

You may have:

  • Teaching qualification, with at least three years teaching experience
  • Preferably a teacher of the deaf qualification or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in deaf education.
  • Knowledge of, or be prepared to acquire knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language
  • Competency in overall language and communication development, educational and audiological management for Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children
  • A current driver's licence is essential


Knowledge of tikanga and Te reo M­āori would be an advantage, given our commitment to the principles of The Treaty of Waitangi


The successful applicant will possess the ability to establish good working relationships with children, their families, educators and agency staff. Excellent written and oral skills, time management and organisational skills are essential.  The ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner is also essential.


The successful candidate could choose either the Whakatane or Tauranga office as a base.
