About us

Education Infrastructure Service (EIS), a part of the Ministry of Education, creates and supports safe, healthy, inspiring and ICT enabled learning environments. EIS manages the Crown's second largest property portfolio of around 2,500 schools with a book value of $17.8 billion, is responsible for the largest payroll in the country, and transports over 100,000 students to and from school each day.

About the role

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Engineering and Design, the Principal Advisor - Design brings their understanding and perspective of property design and the construction industry to work in partnership with other members of the Engineering & Design team and other staff within EIS to develop, implement and maintain a national set of education property reference designs, design standards and guidelines for school building design.

Your key accountabilities will include: 

  • Providing leadership to the design quality assurance reviews of school project designs to ensure that schools meet the Ministry's design framework.
  • Providing strategic level thinking and leadership into the development of the Property Design Framework including the development of  Reference designs, developed as new or. from previous projects, and Design Standards and Guidelines
  • Taking ownership of complex and escalated issues as a respected subject matter expert.

About you

You will have a tertiary qualification in a design field, ideally architecture.

You will also offer:

  • Experienced in portfolio level design and standard setting
  • Experience in the procurement of design services and products
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and articulate business impacts
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people, including market leading architects, delivery managers, senior government officials and team members.
