Principal Researcher


Would you like join the Analytics and Insights team to help increase student achievement and wellbeing? Are you keen to further develop your stakeholder engagement, communication, evaluative and analytical skills by providing thought provoking solutions and recommendations to New Zealand's decision makers? This opportunity will suit someone who has considerable experience with managing the collection and analysis of structured and unstructured datasets and generating actionable insights. As one of New Zealand's most important sector agencies, the Ministry of Education is dedicated to improving education for all through deriving informative insights which directly benefit success for all students.

You will play a critical role as a thought leader by providing stakeholders with high-level analysis and insights tailored to their needs. You will work with a fast moving and innovative professional team of evaluators and analysts that operate with high intensity and passion for learning what works, what doesn't work and how to use this knowledge to change policy and practice. As an experienced principal evaluator you will lead and mentor others in best practice methodologies and in communicating and reporting on important insights.


To be successful in this role you will need to able to:

  • Lead, undertake and procure complex analysis and evaluation that forwards our understanding of the Education Sector.
  • Thinks strategically (i.e. sees issues through a range of lenses and stakeholder perspectives; and recognises broader implications and connections between issues).
  • Experience with software for the analysis of quantitative data (e.g. SAS, Stata, R) and qualitative data (e.g. NVivo, ATLAS.ti).
    • Excellent stakeholder relationship, visualisation and communication skills 
    • Be self-motivated and self-managed with advanced stakeholder engagement skills (able to deal with diverse views and opinions so as to shape them into agreed outcomes).
    • Strong evaluative and analytical skills to be able to work with structured and unstructured datasets.
    • Manage the development, implementation and maintenance of frameworks and methodologies, quality assurance processes and professional practice models across the Ministry that contribute to a standard policy and research system and work practice
