Help shape the future of Education

At the Ministry of Education, we work together to shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent outcomes.

Our organisation is made up of more than 3,000 talented and committed people around New Zealand, from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

While we work in different groups and on different things, we all strive every day to make the biggest difference we can for every child, young person and adult student in our education system.

About our group and team

We are seeking a Principal Advisor to join our Planning and Performance team.  The team leads the development of internal and external strategy, planning and reporting documents, supporting the Ministry to agree priorities and report an evidence-based performance story.

The team is part of Corporate Strategy and Performance (CSP), which brings together planning and performance, enterprise risk management, project and investment advice and governance to provide coherent insight and strategic advice that enables senior leaders and boards to focus on delivering equitable and excellent outcomes.

About this role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Advisor who can provide technical expertise on the development of key strategy, planning and reporting documents and provides facilitation, thought leadership and advice on content, form and process.  You will ensure that the Ministry's accountability obligations in relation to planning and reporting are to a high standard and continually improved.

This includes:

  • leading the development of Ministry accountability documents and reporting processes that enable the organisation to learn and improve results for learners
  • leading the coordination and delivery of the Ministry's annual planning process, aligned with the strategic outcomes and objectives for the organisation
  • providing technical advice and helping to drive continuous improvement in strategy, planning, performance measurement and reporting.

This could be a great career step with the opportunity to work in a complex and high public interest area, while refining your professional skills and delivering and achieving day to day.

About you

You will have significant experience with public sector planning, reporting and accountability processes and a tertiary qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience.  We are looking for someone with good relationship skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff across the Ministry.  You need strong writing skills and attention to detail in analysing and presenting performance information.

You will also offer:

  • the potential to develop your leadership and technical skills and knowledge in planning and reporting, contributing to wider work across the team and group
  • the ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangata whenuatanga.

We offer a modern work environment with the opportunity to grow and develop as part of a team that links across the organisation and the education sector.

Are you ready to make a difference?

We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds, including Māori, Pacific and people with disabilities, who will enrich our understanding of the education system.

As a government agency, the Ministry is committed to keeping to the Treaty of Waitangi's guiding principles in our work for and with Māori students, their whānau, hapū and iwi.

The Ministry invites applications from fully vaccinated people or people with a valid medical exemption (under the COVID-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021). We will require evidence of your vaccination status, or your medical exemption, at the pre-employment stage of our recruitment process.
