Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga recognises the partnership founded under Te Tiriti o Waitangi between Māori and the Crown. We are committed to having Te Tiriti o Waitangi at the forefront of our work for and with Māori students, their whānau, hapū and iwi.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga - Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

We shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary.

We are making significant changes to how we deliver our service by doing the following:

  • Taking practical action to give effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Giving priority to regional and local voice.
  • Delivering greater responsiveness, accessibility and integrated services and support
  • Improving feedback loops and information flows

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role

The Director of Education leads the delivery of Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga services across a region by coordinating and facilitating organisational and sector efforts to create an education system that raises achievement for all New Zealanders.

They are directly accountable for the performance of the area to deliver responsive solutions in order to realise the local education priorities and goals.

Mōhou ake | About you

Your extensive experience as a senior leader within a large, complex organisation, preferably in service delivery will be crucial to your success within this role. 

 You will also offer the following:

  • A proven track record in change leadership and successful implementation and management of multiple and diverse programmes and services
  • Understanding of the levers and challenges of educational achievement
  • Proven track-record in delivering equitable outcomes for Māori, Pacific and/or people with learning support needs
  • Highly developed engagement and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a broad range of cultural settings, including tikanga Māori
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga

 Mātau rōpū ake | About our ministry, group, and team

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau. To better deliver on this, we are currently undergoing an organisational design change. The transition phase to improve the way we deliver our purpose will be complete in 2023.
