Environmental Protection Authority Board member at Ministry for the Environment, Flexible

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Join the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Board - Help protect New Zealand's way of life

The Minister for the Environment is seeking applications for a member on the Environmental Protection Authority Board. This position will be filled for up to three-years commencing around the start of November.

About the EPA

The EPA was established in 2011 to be the single national-level environmental regulator. It is a stand-alone Crown agent responsible for national-level consenting and regulatory functions under a number of statutes. The EPA Board is the governing body of the EPA, being directly accountable to the Minister for the Environment as well as to Parliament for the performance of the EPA. The Board members work collectively to oversee the activities of the executive leadership team and staff, who carry out the day-to-day operations. Board members may also participate in direct decision-making for environmental consents received by the EPA, as part of a committee made up of other experts.

For more information about the EPA, visit https://www.epa.govt.nz/

Collective requirements

As required by the Environmental Protection Authority Act 2011, Board members should collectively possess the following competencies:

  • experience with governance and organisational change
  • knowledge of New Zealand's environmental management system
  • an understanding of the New Zealand economy and the linkages with environmental management
  • knowledge and experience relating to the Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori
  • an understanding of the administration of environmental and risk management frameworks
  • familiarity with central government processes.

Time commitment and remuneration:

Remuneration is set in accordance with the Cabinet Fees Framework. The current fee rates are $26,500 per annum per member. It is assumed that a Board member works around 30 days per year. Board members are also expected to participate in one or more of the Board's subcommittees.

The preferred candidate will be required to complete an interest disclosure form and background checks prior to appointment to the position.

Applications may be reviewed prior to the close date as well as contact made with candidates.

While this is a flexible position, travel may be required to attend face to face meetings in Wellington.
