Lead Bail Support Officer at Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Department of Corrections), Hawkes Bay (Te Matau a Maui)

Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Bail Support Service seeks to help those who are remanded, or at risk of being remanded in custody, to apply for and maintain bail while making positive changes early in the justice system process. Support is provided to defendants and their whānau to address un-met social needs, across prison, court, and community settings. At sentencing, Bail Support Services provide information to the Court around the defendant's progress on bail to assist the Judge in making sentencing decisions.
We're looking for someone to lead a team of Bail Support Officers in the Hawkes Bay and Tairāwhiti, in a fast-paced, dynamic and exciting environment. Bail Support Services is a team of people who are passionate about making a real difference for defendants and their whānau.
In the Hawkes Bay Bail Support Services will partner with Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated and weave into the Paiheretia te Muka Tangata Kaiarataki service. Te Tumu Whakahaere o Te Wero providers, who make up the Kaiarataki workforce, will extend their services to include those subject to Bail and EM Bail and their whānau.
In Tairāwhiti Bail Support Services are in partnership with Ngāti Porou to help enable their people to reach their full potential whilst on bail. Tairāwhiti region covers both Gisborne city and rural communities.

To be successful in this position you will need to thrive on influencing change. You will be a strong people leader with positive working relationships within the community and will be comfortable managing operational requirements in a complex environment.
Well-developed relationship management skills are essential as the role requires significant stakeholder engagement including with iwi, the community as well as internal stakeholders. Your ability to take strategy and create actions will be pivotal for this role. You will take Ara Poutama Aotearoa and Justice Sector strategies and create operational actions for the team to deliver.

You will have direct influence across a range of areas and will be responsible for and need to demonstrate an ability to:
- Create a high performing team and lead them in their performance
- Develop and build the professional capability of Bail Support Officers and ensure quality decisions and outcomes
- Proven track record building effective working relationships to achieve outcomes, with a broad cross section of people by taking a collaborative and consultative approach, particularly with iwi and kaupapa Māori services (or an ongoing commitment to professional development in this area)
- Delivers for, and demonstrates sensitivity towards Māori, and other cultures
- Understands tikanga and a kaupapa Māori approach
- Identify and engage with stakeholders both within and outside the justice sector
- Take initiative by being a self-starter and motivated worker
Utu ā-tau | Salary
The starting salary for this position is $109,086. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
