Registered Nurse – Screening – Napier - NPHS

  • Make a lasting impact at the frontline of Public Health in this Registered Nurse Screening role
  • Permanent full-time position based in Napier
  • Pay based on the relevant Nursing Collective

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders. We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations — from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities. Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Nurse Screener to join the Outreach Screening Team, within the wider Community and Whanau Wellbeing Team. The role focuses on delivering culturally safe cervical screening services in clinics and the community, improving access for wāhine Māori and Pacific women. Working alongside kaimahi and registered nurses, you'll build trusting relationships, support outreach, and collaborate with stakeholders to raise awareness and participation in cervical, breast, and HPV screening programmes — helping reduce inequities and empower women to take ownership of their health.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Outreach Screening team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and works towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored. The Hawke's Bay balances career opportunities with lifestyle benefits, offering both professional growth and a supportive community

About you

You're passionate about improving health inequities and women's health, with excellent customer service and communication skills. You bring cultural awareness, uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, and have experience working with whānau and communities. Flexible and innovative, you collaborate effectively with Māori communities, primary care staff, and stakeholders in a whānau-centric way. Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office and strong organisational abilities round out your profile.

To thrive in this role, you'll have:

  • Current RN Practising Certificate (Nursing Council of NZ)
  • Post-graduate qualification (or working towards) in the specialty
  • Expert-level practice on the RN Professional Development and Recognition Programme
  • At least three years' experience in public health, communicable diseases, contact tracing, and vaccinations or equivalent relevant experience
  • A certified screen taker
  • Strong computer literacy and a full driver's licence

In short: you're a skilled, culturally grounded nurse who's ready to make a lasting impact in protecting and promoting the health of communities across Aotearoa.
