Job Description

  • Permanent Role Opportunity in Wellington


Inland Revenue's Forecasting and Analysis unit is seeking an experienced financial analyst to join a small team which provides forecasts of tax revenues and departmental social policy expenditures to the Government.


The team also monitors and reports on tax revenue flows and provides quantitative analysis of tax and social policy proposals.  The team is part of the Information and Intelligence Services division of Inland Revenue and provides services to the Policy and Strategy Division.


The appointee will be responsible for:


  • development and enhancement of forecasting and policy analysis models;
  • producing tax revenue and social policy expenditure forecasts;
  • monitoring tax collections against forecast and explaining any differences;
  • research and provision of quantitative information in support of policy projects; and
  • evaluating the fiscal implications of tax and social policy proposals.


Applicants should have:


  • a desire to work in tax and social policy;
  • a sound knowledge of forecasting and modelling techniques;
  • excellent analytical skills;
  • experience in using databases for analytical work, ideally with some SAS programming experience;
  • a high degree of initiative and self-motivation;
  • flexibility (our work can require a fast response);
  • effective communication and relationship management skills.


A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline such as economics, mathematics or statistics is highly desirable, but candidates with other qualifications who have recent experience in economic or social modelling or in financial analysis will be considered.
