Job Description

  • Better systems. Better regulations. Better for everyone.
  • Work collaboratively to provide advice and direction for research work programmes
  • Build networks internationally and nationally to stay on top of current and emerging trends
  • Join us as we realise our ambition to be a world-leading building system regulatory steward
  • Bright modern Wellington CBD offices handy to public transport

Ensuring that the building regulatory system supports New Zealand's social and economic aspirations is a very big undertaking, but at MBIE challenges are what drives us. It's a place where you're encouraged and empowered to seize opportunities to make things better and to enhance the system.

The Building Sector Performance Branch (BSP) is the New Zealand Government's lead advisor on the building regulatory system and we want to be world-leading.

We saw the need to work in a more cross-system, collaborative way with the building sector and we are implementing a new structure and way of working to support us to do this.

About the role

The System Strategy and Performance (SS&P) team in BSP monitors and evaluates system performance and sector trends, and uses this evidence base to develop a strategy for BSP that responds to key issues and opportunities affecting the performance of the building regulatory system.

As the Principal Advisor Architecture and Design you will provide specialist knowledge on building design and you will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide advice and direction for regulatory priorities.  You'll do this by keeping abreast of current and emerging local and international trends in building design and their relationship to the built environment as well as by building strong professional architectural and building design networks, both nationally and internationally.

You will also be responsible for increasing the knowledge base and awareness of the branch on building design and building compliance trends.  This will include providing input to strategic planning, development of the research and evaluation plan and contribute to wider branch projects as appropriate.

Why work for us

  • You will be part of a high profile team focused on responding to key issues and opportunities within the building sector and shaping the regulatory environment
  • Enjoy the variety that each day brings with the different people you meet and things you get involved in
  • Sense of satisfaction from identifying barriers and facilitating solutions in a relationship management focussed role.
  • Enjoy the open plan, friendly and supportive team environment that exists within MBIE

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this role you will be a Registered Architect or have a similar building design qualification with significant practical experience.

In addition you will have:

  • The ability to think strategically in order to position MBIE for future sector outcomes over a five year period.
  • Both a theoretical and practical understanding of building and construction design.
  • Strong problem solving, research and trend tracking skills.
  • Sound project management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of the role of government, regulators and the policy process
  • An understanding of regulatory frameworks and leavers
  • A wide network of relationships and credibility within the architecture and design space.
