Job Description

The Corporate Governance and Information Group (CGI) formed in 2015 as part of the re-shaping of MBIE's corporate functions. The CGI group was created as a result of “building a high performing MBIE” to provide expert support and advice to MBIE business groups. 

We are now looking to refresh and strengthen our capability within CGI by focusing on the key areas where we are best placed to optimise organisational performance.  This next phase of our journey will ensure that we are well positioned to support the wider MBIE in Growing New Zealand for All.


The Principal Advisor, Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) is responsible for providing strategic advice on health, safety and wellbeing-related matters across MBIE.

The Principal Advisor HSW will lead the development of the health and safety management system, including the development of policy, standards and guidelines, and oversee their line managers and workers to enable self-sufficiency, and by providing expert operational advice.

You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write decision papers for consideration by governance committees. You will also require skills in interpreting health and safety data and communicating with the wider organisation what this information means in relation to the performance of operational services.


We are looking for someone with:

Extensive knowledge and experience in managing health and safety in a complex and high-risk safety sensitive environment, ideally within the public sector, including a demonstrated background/experience of:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in occupational health and safety is required along with extensive knowledge and experience from having performed a similar role.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of current health and safety legalisation and relevant regulations
  • Working with teams in dispersed geographical locations
  • Conducting inspections and audits and preparing reports for senior management to promote continuous improvement
  • Accident and incident investigation and leading on the means of implementing lessons learned.  ICAM trained investigator (desirable)
  • Championing and leading discussion about national health and safety objectives with business units
  • Leadership in health and safety by influencing managers to adopt new working practices and improve safety behaviour
  • Managing responses to for staff support and rehabilitation from serious injuries and traumatic situations
  • Successfully driving change in previous organisations
  • A sound understanding of and / or experience in the ACC Partnership Programme including the standards required for audit of the programme
