MBIE's Legal Branch is responsible for providing a centre of leadership and expertise for legal advice for MBIE, and is an exemplar of best practice for both the public service and the wider New Zealand labour and business markets.  This role is for a solicitor or senior solicitor who will be part of the Legal Branch and will primarily provide advice to the Energy and Resource Markets Branch.


The goal of New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals is to use its wider understanding of the energy and resources sector to increase national and regional prosperity through petroleum and minerals exploration and production. Its aim is to attract operators and companies with high environmental and health & safety standards. New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals is committed to responsible management of New Zealand's resources, and to work with other agencies to provide consistent regulation of the petroleum and minerals industries in New Zealand.


As part of a government agency, New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals manages Petroleum Block Offers, minerals tenders and promotes investment in New Zealand. It evaluates and processes permit applications and provides advice on New Zealand's downstream energy markets.  It engages with councils, iwi and communities about petroleum and minerals development. New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals also manages compliance and collects royalties on behalf of the Crown.


We are looking for an experienced solicitor or senior solicitor to join our in-house Commercial Legal team to provide robust legal advice and support to New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals and the Energy and Resource Markets Branch at MBIE. Ideally you will have a background in public law and/or you will have some experience working in the energy sector or a related industry, and you will have a genuine desire to learn more. This is a unique and varied role and would suit someone with an interest in both regulatory and commercial law, who has an inquisitive nature, is confident and has a keen appreciation of New Zealand's business and commercial environment.  


Key requirements:

  • A tertiary qualification in law and a current practising certificate
  • Experience in public law and/or experience working in the energy sector or a related industry.
  • A solid understanding of the mechanisms of government or a desire to learn them.
  • Strong legal technical skills.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which will allow you to convey key messages and ideas or simplify complex issues suitable to the audience.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and an ability to work well with others.
  • Skilled in managing relationships with a complex set of stakeholders and negotiating outcomes for mutual benefit and to achieve shared objectives.  
  • For a Senior Solicitor applicant, the ability to lead assignments and to coach and mentor other team members.
  • Enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature.
