Job Description

About the role.

The Engagement and Communications Advisor reports to the Engagement and Communications Manager and delivers strategic engagement advice and services on an account management basis to specific branches/units/teams and/or programmes of work within the Ministry.  This role will support the work of the Labour, Science and Enterprise Group (LSE) in MBIE which has responsibility for areas including science and innovation, economic development, and labour market policy.

The Engagement and Communications Advisor is based in teams focused on internal and external communications, and stakeholder engagement.  They are expected to work collegially and flexibly with others across the Engagement, Communications and Ministerial Services branch to create a seamless client service. 

Portfolios may change in line with business requirements.

Managing relationships is a key aspect of the role, particularly with senior managers, key external stakeholders such as media, and Ministerial offices.  The role requires someone with a strong understanding of government process and possessing political savvy.


Skills and experience required:

  • At least two years experience in the development and implementation of communication and engagement strategies and plans, and in the writing and delivery of appropriate and audience-focused products using appropriate communications channels
  • Proven ability to take a strategic, proactive approach in the management of reputation opportunities and issues, internal and external communications and stakeholder engagement
  • Proven ability to identify and understand internal and external customer needs and adapt their style and language to meet them
  • Ability to actively engage with a broad range of stakeholders
  • Knowledge, and experience of  internal and external  communications best practice and media management.
  • An understanding of Government decision-making and operating procedures and the ability to set priorities and manage time effectively
  • An understanding of how different channels interact and work best together to achieve objectives
  • Knowledge of emerging digital services, tools and trends, including techniques for optimising digital content.
  • Strong writing, editing and oral communications skills
