About the role

We are seeking an exceptional manager, trusted communications professional and someone with extensive media, communications and workflow management experience to lead a dedicated team of professionals delivering, modern, innovative and strategic communications and ministerial services for a high profile portfolio at MBIE.

Reporting to the MBIE General Manager, Engagement, Communications and Ministerial Services, you will be responsible for leading and managing the engagement, communications and ministerial services team and working with the PDU senior leadership team to help deliver the Government's priorities in the regions.

Communications, stakeholder engagement and ministerial services as one team provide a cross business approach. This team is responsible for writing and coordinating all Ministerial servicing functions, including managing key relationships with the Ministers' offices.

There is a strong emphasis on external focused messaging and products including; stakeholder engagements, website material, media enquiries and PDU external communications. All event management functions are also managed and coordinated from this team.

We are looking for an experienced leader with strategic nous and business acumen, strong relationship management/influencing skills and the ability to navigate through ambiguity.


To succeed in the role you will need to display:

  • Extensive working knowledge of media, communications, stakeholder engagement disciplines and processes along with best practice ministerial services requirements in order to build efficiencies and effectiveness of the team.
  • Experience building trust and influencing senior and executive level leaders as well as a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with our partners and stakeholders to agree to approach and delivery that is coordinated and cohesive. 
  • Knowledge on how to manage the day-to-day pace and delivery pressures of a busy business group while remaining connected and supporting the wider organisation
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of developing and implementing communications and stakeholder engagement strategies. 
  • Experience in managing a busy and varied portfolio of work with priorities that change frequently
  • Significant experience in ministerial service functions, including managing key relationships with Ministers' offices
  • A proven track record of leading a function at a senior level in a medium to large public sector or business organisation
  • Expert knowledge of Government systems and processes, particularly managing multiple demands and expectations
  • Experience in media management and managing media issues
  • A relevant tertiary qualification preferably in Communications and Marketing or a related discipline

You will have a key leadership role to play in working across our government partners to provide cohesive and high quality results for ministers and stakeholders.
