About the position

This is a unique opportunity for a talented policy leader to provide leadership and strategic direction to a diverse branch. 

The Commerce, Consumers and Communications (CCC) branch is responsible for providing robust policy advice enabling digital inclusion and access for New Zealanders to broadband and mobile. It supports consumers by focusing on financial literacy and consumer protection legislation, as well as empowering businesses within the domain of competition law and intellectual property law.

As General Manager CCC, you report directly to the Deputy Chief Executive Building, Resources and Markets (BRM), and are a member of the BRM senior leadership team.

You will lead the development and delivery of policy advice and ensure the branch operates efficiently and effectively supporting the group and MBIE's wider strategic direction.      

You will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders, varying from Ministers and Minister's offices, iwi and Māori stakeholders, industry stakeholders, other government departments and wider MBIE colleagues.   

You will be part of a team working closely together to make sure outcomes make it easier for business and consumers by being a smart regulator, delivering future-focused, strategic policy advice.

 

Key skills/experience required

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and extensive and comparable relevant experience
  • Experience leading the development and delivery of policy advice and regulatory operation at a senior level
  • Proven leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage and motivate staff and an ability to build a strong high performing team in a complex organisation
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships and to develop and maintain effective relationships with Ministers, senior public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manoeuvre though complex political situations effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to keep inquiring and learning under pressure or in situations with high ambiguity
  • A strategic thinker who is able to make the connections between various aspects of the organisation and implications for their business unit
