About the position

This is a unique opportunity for a talented policy leader to provide leadership and strategic direction to a high profile branch. 

The Energy and Resource Markets (ERM) branch is responsible for providing robust policy and regulatory advice on energy markets, strategic advice, operational regulation, compliance services and external sector leadership to ensure that New Zealand's oil, gas, mineral and coal resources are effectively managed.

As General Manager ERM, you report directly to the Deputy Chief Executive Building, Resources and Markets (BRM), and are a member of the BRM senior leadership team.

You will lead the development and delivery of policy advice relating to energy and resource markets, as well as regulation and promotion activities in relation to petroleum and minerals. Furthermore, you will ensure the branch operates efficiently and effectively supporting the group and MBIE's wider strategic direction.      

You will also be accountable for all advice in relation to the energy portfolio and its connection with other related portfolios.

You will be part of a team working closely together to make sure outcomes make it easier for business and consumers by being a smart regulator, delivering future-focused, strategic policy advice.


Key skills/experience required

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and extensive and comparable relevant experience
  • Experience leading the development and delivery of policy advice and regulatory operation at a senior level
  • Proven leadership skills including demonstrated ability to engage and motivate staff and an ability to build a strong high performing team in a complex organisation
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships and to develop and maintain effective relationships with Ministers, senior public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to manoeuvre though complex political situations effectively and efficiently
  • Ability keep inquiring and learning under pressure or in situations with high ambiguity
  • A strategic thinker who is able to make the connections between various aspects of the organisation and implications for their business unit
