About the role:

This role reports to the Manager, Science and Innovation in the Evidence and Insights Branch.   The Evidence and Insights branch develops the evidence base for policy and operational decision making in the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment. We provide trusted advice on the impact and effectiveness of government initiatives. We provide the evidence-based insights that help decision-makers do their best work.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Data and Research Analyst, with a strong track record of leading and developing analytical projects and work programmes, to join our Science and Innovation Evidence and Insights Team.  You will be an experienced data analyst with the ability to translate complex data into compelling narratives with the ability to engage and support staff to help further strengthen understanding and awareness across MBIE.  You will also have a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement and generating new ideas and ways of doing things. In this role you will primarily be responsible for reviewing and developing our bibliometric work programme and contributing to the wider science and innovation analysis and research portfolio.

Skills and Experience:

We are keen to hear from you if you have:

  • Proven experience of developing and leading complex analytical projects and programmes
  • A demonstrable background in the use of specialist data mining and analytics software (R based, Python, SQL or similar) with experience quantifying the benefits of advanced analytics
  • A proven track record and experience in using advanced analytics to conduct complex analyses of large amounts of data or information
  • The ability to translate complex and technical information to be easily understood by non-technical staff
  • A background in delivering tailored data solutions and creating value through the use of advanced modelling and statistical analysis
  • A customer-focused approach with the ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships and to develop trust and credibility with senior managers, staff and key internal and external stakeholders
  • Enjoy working with policy and operational staff to understand the issues relevant to them and how research and evaluation might provide relevant insights to them
  • Foster an open, collaborative environment that encourages quality, innovation, on-going learning and knowledge sharing
  • Be comfortable with and effective at guiding and mentoring other evaluators / researchers in their projects
  • A proactive, can-do attitude with a high level of initiative, sound judgement and discretion
  • Exceptional teamwork and collaborative abilities and a willingness to share knowledge and expertise with others
  • Highly developed communication and writing skills
