Job Description

  • Two permanent opportunities, one solicitor and one senior solicitor
  • Providing general legal advice across MBIE's different regulatory systems
  • Busy central Wellington role with a high degree of client interaction

About the role

Due to movement with the Legal Branch we have two opportunities to join our Corporate & Registries Team.

We are seeking a Solicitor to work with an initial regulatory focus on energy markets to ensure that NZ's focus on oil, gas, mineral and coal resources are effectively managed.

For the senior solicitor role there is again opportunity to work across MBIE's regulatory systems with an initial regulatory focus on supporting those working within the Building & Construction system including occupational regulation.  Ideally you will have experience in the fields of privacy, official information and regulatory compliance, as well as strong communication and relationship management skills.

Both roles will be working with other in-house counsel providing advice on a wide range of legal issues.  You will need to be technically proficient, agile, adaptable and a strong communicator.

Skills and experience

To be successful in the role, you will need to have the following:

  • Experience in public law and an understanding of the mechanisms of government
  • Strong legal technical skills
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication abilities, which allow you to convey key ideas and issues in a way that is suitable to the audience
  • Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
  • Enthusiasm, drive and a proactive nature
  • A tertiary qualification in law and a practising certificate

Experience working in relation to one or more of MBIE's 16 regulatory systems would be an advantage – for example, Accident Compensation, Building, Communications markets, Competition, Consumer and Commercial, Corporate Governance, Employment relations and standards, Energy markets, Immigration and/or Trade international and standards.

For the Senior Solicitor position:

  • experience  working on governance, integrity and conduct matters and / or regulatory compliance and enforcement
  • the ability to lead assignments and to coach and mentor other team members

About the team

The Corporate & Registries team provides general legal advice to all of MBIE's operations, including in relation to MBIE's 16 different regulatory systems and on governance, integrity and conduct matters that touch the organisation.  Due to flexibility within the team, there is scope for our lawyers to work in relation to different regulatory systems, depending on their experience and interest.
