Principal Financial Accountant (Reporting) at Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, Wellington

About the role

We currently have a permanent opportunity within our External Reporting team for a Principal Financial Accountant with a passion for customers, innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.

As Principal Financial Accountant you will lead delivery of key products such as Baseline Updates, the Annual report and Estimates production.  You will also bring your technical expertise to ensure MBIE meets its statutory responsibilities and receives consistent and high quality advice and support. .

You will manage and build relationships with the relevant teams across MBIE and external stakeholders, including the Treasury and Audit NZ, to deliver successful outcomes and seek opportunities for continuous improvement in our processes, financial reporting and appropriation management.  You will also be expected to mentor and coach other members of the team to help them achieve their potential.

 


Skills and experience required:

We are keen to hear from you if you have:

  • Wide ranging knowledge and application of the Public Finance Act
  • Proven experience in financial reporting in compliance with accounting standards and regulations
  • Knowledge of machinery-of-government will be an advantage
  • Experience in reporting to external stakeholders particularly Audit
  • Chartered Accountant qualifications or equivalent
  • Good communication and coaching skills, especially in explaining more complex technical issues
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Must have legal right to live and work in NZ

 

About the team:

The External Reporting team sits in Finance and Performance's Enterprise Performance and Reporting branch. The External reporting team responsible for the delivery of a number of key processes and reporting, including baseline updates, Annual report, Estimates documents and Annual review.

The provision of technical advice and support to business groups is also a key function to ensure compliance. We deliver advice and support via training, guidance documents and ad hoc queries and focuses on appropriation management and the application of accounting standards.
