Job Description

Advisor Ethics

Do you have an interest in health and disability research ethics and the system of ethical review in New Zealand? Are you a great communicator who is well organised and would enjoy being part of a team that provides high quality advice and support to Ethics Committees?   This role might just be what you're looking for!

You will be working in a dedicated team with independent Ministerial Ethics Committees – four Health and Disability Ethics Committees, the Ethics Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology, the National Ethics Advisory Committee, and the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology – as well as advising researchers on how to navigate the ethical review process. The work is varied and intellectually challenging.

The Advisor Ethics provides support and advice to seven Ethics Committees, including advisory and operational decision-making committees, and sits within the Protection, Regulation and Assurance Business unit. Our team is very busy and due to funding growth in health research the work of the ethics committees has grown, so we are seeking an Advisor to help review research applications to the committees.

Some domestic travel is involved.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • An interest in health and disability research ethics, the principles of ethical review, and the system of ethical review in New Zealand, and an understanding of research principles and design
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly, confidently and concisely and answer complex customer enquiries on our 0800 line
  • Experience in servicing Committees (preparing agendas, minutes), and a knowledge of government processes
  • A proven ability to work within tight timeframes, organise work efficiently and work both independently and as an effective team member
  • A commitment to developing and maintaining your own skills and knowledge in your areas of expertise and interest
  • Some knowledge of Tikanga Maori would be helpful.
