Job Description

Radiation Safety Advisory Council

The Radiation Safety Advisory Council is a Ministerial-appointed Council established under the Radiation Safety Act 2016. This Council is responsible for providing advice to the Minister of Health and Director for Radiation Safety on matters relating to or affecting radiation safety, and standards relating to radiation safety. It also advises and makes recommendations to:

  • the Minister on the exercise of the Minister's powers under the Radiation Safety Act;

  • the Director on the adoption of recommendations, policies, codes of practice, and standards relating to radiation safety;

  • the Director on any matters relating to authorisation under the Act that the Director refers to the Council.

On behalf of Hon Dr David Clark, Minister of Health, the Ministry is advertising for the following positions on the Council:

  • members with knowledge, expertise or interest in radiation and nuclear safety. Ideal candidates will hold knowledge or and experience relating to physics, human health risks, and/or environmental risks associated with ionising radiation use, and the management of those risks.

  • members with knowledge and experience in the use of radiation and radiation sources. Ideal candidates will be either health professionals, veterinary practitioners, scientific researchers, or other industry professionals who work with radiation and radiation sources.

  • lay members. Ideal members will have either legal expertise, experience in policy development, or be able to articulate issues from the perspectives of patients, Māori, or ethics.

Members will be appointed for terms of up to three years. At the first Council meeting, members will be required to elect a Chair and, if desired, a Deputy Chair.

Applications from across New Zealand are welcome. The Council will meet at least three times a year. Members undertake Council activities as independent persons responsible to the Council as a whole and are not representatives of professional organisations or communities. Council members are paid $250 per day, and are entitled to be reimbursed for actual and reasonable travelling (if required), and other expenses incurred in carrying out their duties.

To apply, please provide a:

  • completed declaration form (attached) for the relevant position

  • covering letter, detailing your experience that is relevant to a position on the council

  • current curriculum vitae (CV).

You must be a New Zealand resident and reside in New Zealand in order to be considered for the role. Please note that core public servants are also generally not considered for this role.

Applications must be made using the Ministry of Health online recruitment tool, and close Monday, 3 September 2018.
