The Ministry of Health is a very different place to the one you might imagine. Over the last year or so, we've welcomed some big changes, with new management and a new culture of openness and transparency.

We're offering you an opportunity not only to be a part of this positive change, but to expand our reach and impact using digital tools so that all New Zealanders can access our services and knowledge base.

Digital is at the heart of how we engage and connect with our audience, so it's a pivotal role. You'll lead a team to develop channels for digital communications, manage our visual identity, and seek out the best ways of enabling New Zealanders to find reliable health information.

This is high-impact work with a lot of responsibility. It's a rare opportunity to lift the profile of the Ministry and influence our communications' effectiveness, using the digital tools that you've developed. You can really make your mark here – the foundations are there but there's scope to take your own approach and see the results.

If you can see the scale of what you could achieve, you should be getting excited by now. You'll probably already be thinking about the diverse backgrounds of the people you'll be trying to reach, and working out how you'll do that digitally.

You'll bring solid experience in leading a digital communications team, and developing and delivering effective strategies, including using social media. A well-regarded leader, you'll have a strong understanding of how to connect with audiences and how digital tools fit in.

You could come from the public or private sector, or an agency background. Government experience isn't essential – what we're looking for is a collegial, client-centred person who can build strong relationships, networks, and connections. You'll need a certain grasp of technical elements, such as a strong understanding of Web standards and a working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and metadata standards.
