Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join the Communicable Diseases Team within our Public Health Group. The role of the team is to ensure New Zealanders are protected from pandemics, epidemics and outbreaks.

As the advisor or senior advisor you will contributing to the team's work programme. The current work programme includes development of risk management strategies that will:

 

  • protect the public against notifiable diseases and other threats such as new and emerging communicable diseases (including antibiotic resistant pathogens)

  • protect New Zealanders against pandemics, epidemics and outbreaks

  • improve the health of populations through the prevention and control of communicable diseases.

The team also provides technical advice to Public Health Units for the management of outbreaks and undertakes a sector leadership role in responding to pandemics.

To be successful in this role as an advisor you will have:

  • a relevant tertiary qualification (for example, public health, health science, microbiology, epidemiology)

  • excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills

  • resilience and an ability to work effectively as a team player in a fast paced environment

  • an ability to manage your own work load

    an ability to analyse complex information to provide advice to a wide range of audiences

  • an ability to attend and participate within National Health Coordination Centre, National Security System and duty system, briefings, training sessions and exercises

  • a willingness and ability to participate in on-call rosters to provide technical advice after hours.

 

In addition, a senior advisor is expected to have:

  • relevant technical expertise (for example communicable disease surveillance or prevention and control)

  • an ability to support and mentor others, lead projects and activities and ensure successful outcomes

  • knowledge and understanding of quality management, process design and/or risk management strategies.
