Transforming New Zealand's Public Health System
The Minister of Health has committed to transforming New Zealand's Public Health system. The changes will reduce fragmentation, strengthen leadership and accountability. In particular, the changes aim to improve equity of access and outcomes for all New Zealanders. The Partnership between Health New Zealand and Maori Health Authority in ensuring Te Tiriti obligations to improve Māori health are embodied in the new entities. The formation of Health New Zealand and the Maori Health Authority is a key component of the transformation of New Zealand's Public Health system. The entities will be formed at the passing of legislation expected to be in place from 1st July 2022.
This position will transfer along with the broader work programme from the Ministry of Health to interim Health New Zealand on 1 June 2022 as part of the Health and Disability Sector Reforms. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates at interview.

Te whainga poto o tēnei tūranga – What is the purpose of this position?
As Programme Director, Mental Health and Addiction Workforce, you will plan, lead and drive the programme of work to develop a diverse, resilient, skilled and sustainable mental health and addiction workforce. The focus of this programme is to support the growth and development of both existing and new workforces to deliver on the transformed approach to mental wellbeing called for in the Government's response to He Ara Oranga and the associated investment in new services.
Ngā Pūkenga me ngā Wheako – Skills & Experience:
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and at least three to five years equivalent experience
- Demonstrated experience working at a senior level across large and complex programmes of work
- Strong understanding of or experience working in the mental health and addiction sector and workforce
- Strong relationship management and engagement skills with the ability to build collaborative and positive relationships and influence a diverse range of stakeholders
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and delivering services effectively for Māori
- Lived experience of mental health and/or addiction is highly regarded.
- Lived experience of mental health and addiction is welcomed
