About the Sector Group:

Sector Group is a set of multi-disciplinary teams that brings together the best of strategy, policy, data analysis, research and evaluation capabilities to inform decision making by Justice Sector leaders. We support justice agencies to work together to deliver ambitious results for a safe and just New Zealand.

The Investment Team is part of the Ministry's Sector Group. We support an integrated justice sector to deliver ambitious results, for a safe and just New Zealand.

We are a team of innovation, strategy and insight. You'll have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other agencies and a range of people in the Ministry of Justice. You'll be exposed to leaders in the organisation and the sector and have the opportunity to undertake work for Ministers. You will be challenged and interested by the diverse range of work and will enjoy a busy work programme with real impact.


About the role:

This role is an exciting proposition for someone wanting to influence government direction at a strategic and whole of sector level. The role is full of intellectual challenge, stretch opportunities and leadership potential.

The Investment team works at the nexus of strategy, data analysis, research and investment. We are multi-disciplinary team with expertise in policy, finance, strategy and governance. We are looking for a Principal Advisor to complement the team with their analytical power, relationship and influencing skills, networks and capacity to think strategically.

The Principal Advisor, Sector Investment, will lead analysis to inform investment decisions that are framed within the Government's Living Standards and Wellbeing frameworks. This includes taking a whole of system perspective and a life-time view of system users to enhance wellbeing. In particular, the Principal Advisor will be expected to ensure any investment advice will work to support outcomes for Maori.

The team has a Manager, two Principal Advisors, three Senior Advisors and two Advisors. The Principals lead, coach and lift the capacity of the Investment Team and the wider sector.

We are particularly keen to engage with progressive and creative professionals that can bring new analytical tools and frameworks to help address the systemically complex issues we are grappling with.

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Experience leading complex policy and strategy projects to successful completion
  • Experience in a Senior Advisor or Principal Advisor position
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior staff and peers
  • The ability to produce and articulate analysis and advice within a bi-cultural and multi-cultural context
  • Experience communicating with a wide range of senior audiences on complex issues
  • Broad range of analytical frameworks and the ability to assimilate and translate complex information
  • Ability to see and convey the big picture while knowing how to achieve long term change
