Summer Internship, Waitangi Tribunal Unit - Wellington
We are looking for hardworking, talented and motivated people to join us as interns over the summer period.
- Multiple full-time positions available
- Utilise and develop your understanding of Tikanga and Mātauranga Māori
- Gain government experience and exposure to the Waitangi Tribunal
Te āhuatunga a te tūranga/About the Role
Through this role in the unit, you will gain insight into the work of the Waitangi Tribunal, the Ministry of Justice and the wider public service. You will have the opportunity to support experienced staff across our Research Services, Inquiry Facilitation, Report Writing, and Claims and Registry teams.
The internships are from November 2022 to February 2023. The internships are paid, and the exact start and finish dates are flexible. The positions are full-time and based in Wellington.
We are keen to receive applicationsfrom those with a tertiary qualification or those close to completing a tertiary qualification. In particular, we are seeking those studying History, Indigenous Studies, Māori Studies, Law or Policy, although other disciplines are also considered.
He pūkenga tou/Skills and Experience
To be successful in the role you would be able to demonstrate the following either through your studies, work history, or a combination of both:
- An understanding of Tikanga and Mātauranga Māori and a knowledge of Te Reo
- Knowledge of Treaty of Waitangi issues, both historical and contemporary
- Ability to prioritise work and effectively self-manage
- Professionalism in your work behaviours and the quality of your work
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

It provides a comprehensive range of services to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent commission of inquiry that inquiries into and reports on claims submitted by Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975.
