Job Description

  • Become MPI's lead science adviser
  • Flexible role, make it your own

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking an exceptional thought leader from the science community for the position of Departmental Science Adviser (DSA).  You will be influential in enhancing MPI's reputation as a significant contributor to the growth and protection of New Zealand.

You will be a direct report to the Director-General and be a member of the senior leadership team. You will be expected to work closely with the Prime Minister's Chief Science Adviser and with Science Advisors across other government departments.

You will provide MPI with oversight of its scientific processes and science engagement.  This will include the quality of science conducted or purchased by MPI and our relationships with the national and international science community.

The Ministry will provide flexibility for the right person around part-time or full-time work.  The role will initially be for a 3 year period. The right candidate will be well connected in the science community and the flexibility in the role will allow the right person to maintain this.

The successful applicant will:

  • be an accomplished and well-respected leader in an area of science relevant to the primary industries;
  • be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills;
  • understand the challenges of research prioritisation, delivery, quality assurance, and knowledge/technology extension and uptake;
  • have strong connections to the New Zealand and international science community;
  • have a strong understanding of the primary sector and the science required to support MPI's broad range of responsibilities;
  • have an understanding of government processes and the role of science and innovation in informing policy and regulatory systems;
  • have the ability to think strategically and take a broad system view.

If you are steeped in science and well networked and respected in the scientific community then this is an opportunity to use those skills to have a positive effect on how MPI uses science to grow and protect New Zealand.
