Job Description

The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for an engagement and behaviour change specialist to join the Aquatic and Environment Health Team (Biosecurity Surveillance & Incursion Investigation), within the Operations Branch.

The Aquatic and Environment Health Team includes people with diverse skills and experience. We operate in a dynamic high trust environment in order to effectively contribute to New Zealand's biosecurity system. Our focus is on Surveillance and Incursion Investigation, essentially looking for and investigating biosecurity risks. Our aim is to reduce biological risk to our natural resources and protects the integrity and reputation of New Zealand's primary industries.

We are looking to complement our specialist technical skill sets with an expert in engagement, social science, or behaviour change. As a Senior Advisor you'll lead improvement in how we engage New Zealanders, tanagata whenua and New Zealand industries to enable them to participate effectively in New Zealand's biosecurity surveillance system.

Your role will be to design, develop, implement, and continually adapt, behaviour-based programmes and tools to improve general/passive surveillance for New Zealand's biosecurity system. An understanding of human behaviour and an ability to identify the drivers of human behaviour will help you succeed in this role. This role will use your relationship management skills as you'll engage with a wide range of stakeholders from environmental and science sectors to tangata whenua and the public to other government agencies.

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to design and implement behavioural change initiatives, outreach or engagement programmes
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative programmes of work
  • Excellent engagement, collaboration and networking skills
  • Ability to engage and work with tangata whenua to achieve successful programme outcomes
  • Experience with information and data management and analysis
